Renew Sports Rehab - Physical Therapy TEAM

Dr. Betty Chen, PT, DPT, OCS, NCS, FAAOMPT

Dr. Betty Chen’s path to physical therapy started on the track. While completing her undergraduate degree in Applied Ecology at UC Irvine, she spent her free time coaching cross country and track at Marina High School. Seeing firsthand how injuries sidelined young athletes sparked a lifelong passion for movement and healing, leading her to earn her Doctor of Physical Therapy from Western University of Health Sciences in 2010.

Betty started her career in inpatient acute care before moving to the outpatient side in 2011. Driven by a deep curiosity for complex cases, she pursued extensive post-graduate training. She completed the Kaiser Permanente Orthopaedic Residency, becoming a Board-Certified Orthopaedic Clinical Specialist (OCS) in 2015. She followed that with the Kaiser Sports and Orthopaedic Manual Fellowship, which brought her full circle back to UC Irvine, where she worked closely with the women’s soccer and water polo sports medicine teams.

Today, Betty is among an elite group of therapists holding dual board certifications, having earned her Neurological Clinical Specialist (NCS) credential in 2020. She is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists (FAAOMPT). Because her expertise spans both orthopedics and neurology, she is uniquely equipped to treat a diverse range of patients, whether they are recovering from a sports injury, navigating chronic pain, or managing complex neurological and vestibular conditions like post-concussion syndrome.

Beyond the clinic, Betty loves pouring back into her profession and community. She shares her expertise as an adjunct faculty member at Azusa Pacific University, teaching the next generation of physical therapists, and serves as an Assembly Representative for the California Physical Therapy Association (Long Beach/South Bay District). No matter how complex the clinical case, her approach to care remains simple: listen closely, provide unwavering support, and partner with patients to help them reclaim their lives.

When she isn’t working or teaching, Betty is usually on the move. She loves exploring local coffee shops, playing soccer, running, and snowboarding in the winter. Most of all, she loves spending time with her husband, Drew, and their three kids, Joseph, Samantha, and Abigail, serving at her church, and mentoring college students through the Asian American Christian Fellowship at UCI and CSULB.

Dr. Matt Davis, PT, DPT

Matt grew up in the South Bay and studied at the University of California, Davis, where he first discovered a love for strength training and powerlifting. An ankle injury and subsequent surgery during this time piqued his interest in physical therapy during his own rehab journey back to lifting and being active. He earned a Master’s in Kinesiology at California Baptist University before completing his doctorate in physical therapy at Mount St. Mary’s University in Los Angeles. Following graduation, Matt completed the Orthopedic Residency program at Optum in Torrance, CA, and is in the process of completing his Orthopedic Clinical Specialty. He has provided a variety of pro bono physical therapy services ranging from the unhoused population in Skid Row to the student athletes at Mira Costa High School. In the clinic, he continues to hone his skills treating patients with complex medical backgrounds and chronic pain, as well as recreational and student athletes. His own experience with managing chronic back pain while pushing his physical limits fuels his passion to motivate his patients to overcome their pain to perform at the level they desire.

In his free time, he stays physically active through calisthenics, powerlifting, and Olympic weightlifting. He also spent the last two years experimenting with his own training programs for distance running and ran the Honolulu Marathon in 2025, with more planned for the future. He tries with all his might to keep up with his wife on the ski slopes and to maintain his skills as a former high school varsity golfer with D3 aspirations.

Dr. Celina Caovan, PT, DPT, OCS, CSCS

Celina is a Doctor of Physical Therapy, Orthopedic Clinical Specialist (OCS), and certified strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS). A double graduate of the University of Southern California, where she served as Class President and received the Order of the Golden Cane Award, the highest honor for USC physical therapy graduates. During her time at USC, she worked in USC’s Athletic Medicine program with the Water Polo and Football Team. She has a background as a competitive swimmer and water polo player. At the heart of her approach is neuromuscular re-education: she believes that building a true mind-body connection is the foundation of lasting physical health. Without it, the body won’t be able to do what you ask of it. Whether she’s working with high-level athletes or patients of all ages, Celina’s goal is to help people move better, feel stronger, and stay connected to the bodies that carry them through life. She specializes in working with people that have been suffering from chronic pain using an empathetic approach. In her free time, Celina enjoys going to the beach, surfing, playing beach volleyball, traveling, reading and trying new foods and hobbies.
